Charly spendete 2013 dem Label Vee Jay zum Anlass der Gründung in 1953 eine Box mit 10 CDs. Auf den CDs findet man 269 Songs von 120 Musikern und Bands und davon wurden 112 Songs zu Hits. Charly legte der Box ein Heft bei, das ausführlich über Vee Jay informiert. Die CDs wurden nach verschiedenen Themen sortiert. Es geht los mit den Hits und endet mit Jazz Juwelen. Die von Vee Jay vertretenen Stile reichen von reinem Blues über Soul und R&B bis zu Jazz.
Vee-Jay Records war das erste unabhängige von Schwarzen gegründete Label. Vee-Jay Records war von Anfang an unabhängig von den großen Plattenfirmen. Gegründet 1953 von Vivian Carter, Smilin‘ Jimmy Bracken und Calvin Carter, der Bruder von Vivian. Vee stand für „Vivian“ und Jay für „Jimmy“. Vivian Carter arbeitete als DJ in einem lokalen Radiosender und Jimmy Bracken besaß einen Schallplattenladen in Gary, Indiana. Die drei Gründungsmitglieder mieteten eine Garage und bauten sie zu einem Aufnahmestudio um. Es gibt verschiedene Versionen warum es zur Idee der Gründung von Vee-Jay kam. Der spätere Präsident von Vee-Jay, Randy Wood, erzählte es so:
Vivian Carter stellte in ihrer Sendung Musiker vor, vorwiegend aus dem Bereich Gospel, die zum großen Teil keinen Vertrag bei einem Label hatten. Die Hörer versuchten Platten aufzutreiben und wurden auch in dem Geschäft von Jimmy Bracken nicht fündig. Es lag als Nahe, man verpflichtete die Musiker und nahm Schallplatten mit ihnen auf. Calvin Carter schrieb Songs die Songs und betätigte sich als Produzent.
Gospel wurde schnell ergänzt durch Blues und R&B. Die ersten Künstler bei Vee-Jay war die Doo Wop Band The Spaniels und der Blues und R&B Musiker Jimmy Reed. Es gab die ersten kleineren Hits: Jimmy Reed mit „Rool & Rhumba“ und The Spaniels mit „Baby It’s You“.
Vee-Jay Records zog nach Chicago und immer mehr Musiker wurden verpflichtet. Zu ihnen gehörten John Lee Hooker, Elmor James, Jerry Butler, Gene Chandler Memphis Slim, J.B. Lenoir The Staple Singers, Little Richards, die Beatles und etliche mehr.
Ein Grund des Niedergangs von Vee-Jay waren auch die Beatles. Weil sie einen Fünfjahresvertrag mit ihnen hatten und 1,5 Millionen Platten der Beatles verkauften, wurden die großen Labels neidisch und verklagten Vee-Jay wo es auch nur einen kleinen Anlass gab. Vee-Jay bekam zwar in den meisten Fällen Recht, aber ca. 65 Prozesse waren zu viel. Die Gläubiger zahlten nicht mehr und 1963 musste Konkurs angemeldet werden.
