Hinter diesen drei Namen steht das wohl erfolgreichste Trio von Songwritern und Produzenten in Sachen R&B und Soul. Es sind Brian Holland, Lamont Dozier und Eddie Holland. Sie waren prägend für die Musik aus Detroit, auch Motor City genannt, und den hier beheimateten Motown Sound. Sie arbeiteten für Berry Gordy dem das Label Motown Records und der Musikverlag Jobete Music Publishing gehörten.
Die Box ist eine Sammlung aller von dem Trio komponierte oder produzierte Songs, die auf 45er Singles erschienen. Man beschränkt sich bei der Sammlung auf die von den Drei gegründeten Label Invictus, Hot Wax und Music Merchant. Die Songs, die „Holland Dozier Holland” berühmt gemacht hatten, erschienen bei Tamla Motown. Nach etlichen Prozessen mit Jobete Music Publishing und Tamla Motown, der Streit ging um Urheberrechte und man warf sich gegenseitig Betrug vor, gründete man 1969 das Label Hot Wax, kurze Zeit später Invictus und 1972 Music Merchants.
Für ihre neuen Label komponierten sie nicht allein, sondern holten sich Songschreiber wie General Johnson, Greg Perry, Ronald Dunbar, William Weatherspoon oder Angelo Bond. Das Produzieren der Songs stand immer mehr im Vordergrund.
Es waren anfangs nicht die ganz großen Namen die für Invictus oder Hot Wax arbeiteten, die standen immer noch bei Tamla Motown unter Vertrag und sangen Songs von Holland Dozier Holland, aber einige von ihnen sah man später in den Charts.
