Die Nuggets waren ursprünglich eine Zusammenstellung von mehr oder weniger erfolgreichen Songs der US-Charts, gepresst auf einem Doppelalbum. Es waren Songs der Jahre 1965 bis 1968. Die zwei Schallplatten (Doppel- LP) kamen erstmals 1972 auf Electra in den Handel. Vier Jahre später erfolgte die Wiederveröffentlichung. Sie war immer noch auf Vinyl, nur mit neuem Cover versehen, auf dem Label Sire.
Als die CD populär war gelangten die originalen Nuggets der Doppel-LP, zusammen mit einundneunzig zusätzlichen Songs auf vier CDs, in die mir vorliegende Box. Die Veröffentlichung erfolgte im Jahr 1998 durch Rhino. Rhino legte den CDs ein Begleitheft bei, das unter anderen auch das Vorwort zur Erstausgabe 1972 enthielt. Das Interessante daran ist, es wurde vom Gitarristen der Patti Smith Group Lenny Kaye geschrieben. Kaye nannte die Musik „Punk-Rock“. Lenny Kaye und Jac Holzman waren verantwortlich für die Zusammenstellung der ersten Vinylausgabe.
Außer diversen Begleittexten zu der Box und den Nuggets, sind die Songs und die Bands beschrieben und das mit vollständigen Listen der an den Aufnahmen beteiligten Musikern.

Nuggets II: Original Artyfacts from the British Empire and Beyond 1964-1969
In der gleichen Tradition wie die erste Nuggets kam eine zweite Box auf den Markt. Rhino kümmerte sich hier allerdings nicht um die USA sondern um Britannien und den Rest der Welt. Erschienen ist diese Box 2001. Vertreten sind Musiker aus aller Welt von Großbritannien über Peru bis Japan und Kanada und mehr.
Der Inhalt ist, außer den vier CDs, ebenfalls ein Heft mit vielen Informationen zu den Songs und den beteiligten Musikern.
Beide Boxen bieten eine Mende Informationsstoff für Rockhistoriker. Da es sich hier nicht nur um skurrile Songs und Bands handelt sondern auch um solche mit einer gewissen Bekanntheit (viel Songs waren in den Charts vertreten), lassen sich die CDs sehr gut anhören.
