Im Laufe der Jahre entwickelte sich Stiff Records immer mehr zu einem meiner Lieblingslabel. Ian Peel schrieb über Stiff Records: The World’s Flexible Label. Wenn man die Liste der Musiker sieht, kann man das unterschreiben.
Stiff Records wurde 1976 von Dave Robinson und Andrew Jakeman (aka Jake Riviera) gegründet. Lee Brilleaux von Dr. Feelgood lieh ihnen 400 Pfund für den Anfang. Das Label bestand bis 1987. Es passte genau in die Zeit von Punk, Ska und New Wave. Als diese Zeit zu Ende ging, war es auch das Ende von Stiff.
Die Box beinhaltet 4 CDs auf denen von allen Stiff-Musikern Songs vertreten sind. Die Songs sind Appetithappen und verlangen sich um einige der Bands mehr zu kümmern. Viele der Bands sind bis heute im Geschäft oder waren es noch vor Kurzem, zum Beispiel Motörhead. Von anderen Bands wird man wahrscheinlich nie wieder etwas hören. Zum Glück gibt es eine Reihe von Wiederveröffentlichungen der Alben.
Wie bei derartigen Boxen üblich, gibt es im Begleitheft zu jedem Musiker eine kleine Geschichte mit der Biografie und dem Verhältnis zu Stiff Records. Unterlegt natürlich mit Fotos. Zwei Seiten zeigen alle Cover der LPs im Kleinformat. Im Begleitheft der Box wird auch der Begriff „Pub Rock“ genannt. Der Begriff entstand auf einer von Jake Riviera 1975 organisierten Package Tour mit Chilli Willi & The Red Hot Peppers, Kokomo und Dr.Feelgood. Die Bands traten in den Clubs in einer Art Show auf. Die Bühnen waren klein und das Equipment wurde von allen Musikern abwechselnd verwendet.
Die erste Single auf Stiff Records war „So It Goes“ mit der B-Seite „Heart Of The City“ von Nick Lowe und das ist auch der Einstieg in die Welt von Stiff.
